How do players qualify for Mosconi Cup 2026 Team USA?

The race for Mosconi Cup 2026 Team USA spots has two weeks left. The World Nineball Tour has named the Philippines Open Pool Championship in Manila, Oct. 20-24, as the official cutoff, so the three automatic places for each side are settled when that event ends, according to the tour’s qualification announcement.

The ranking is a one-year list that began with the River City Open in 2025, the first event after the 2025 Philippines Open. The top three Americans on it are in. Two wildcard picks then complete each five-player team, and those picks must also meet the event’s qualification criteria.

The format itself does not change: singles, doubles and team matches, each a race to 5 worth one point, with the first side to 11 points taking the Cup. We covered the venue and Europe’s six-year winning run in our Mosconi Cup 2026 preview.

Why is Billy Thorpe ineligible for the Mosconi Cup?

Those qualification criteria have already cost one of America’s best players. To be picked for either team, a player cannot miss more than two events counted as majors on the World Nineball Tour calendar. Billy Thorpe skipped the European Open in Bosnia and Herzegovina in March and the UK Open in May, both for financial reasons, and then did not enter the Arizona Open in Yuma.

According to Absolute Pool, Thorpe only found out he was ineligible shortly before his last-16 match against Robbie Capito at the US Open. He accepted that he should have known the rules, but called the requirement “one of the dumbest rules.” He also said he would have played in Yuma had he known, even though the trip made no financial sense for him.

He is not the only American affected. Lukas Fracasso-Verner missed the US Open, the Florida Open and the Arizona Open after a car accident, and it is not public whether an injury or health clause covers his case.

Who is the captain, and how can you watch in the US?

Johan Ruijsink is back as Team USA’s non-playing captain. He led the Americans to back-to-back wins in 2018 and 2019, and Team USA has lost all six editions since, the World Nineball Tour noted when it confirmed his return.

The 2026 Mosconi Cup will be played Nov. 27-30 at the Caribe Royale Resort in Orlando, Florida. Under the tour’s deal with ESPN, every session streams live on ESPN+ through the ESPN App on phones and connected TVs, and the event is also on WNT TV. Tickets started at $70 for Silver seats and $90 for Gold, with VIP hospitality from $400 and VIP couches from $500.

From the workshop

The Thorpe situation is a reminder that a pro career is built on a schedule as much as on a stroke. Flying to Bosnia, England and Yuma costs real money, and for players without big sponsors those choices are hard. Most of us will never face that rule, but the same idea applies to league and regional players: the people who improve fastest are usually the ones who keep showing up and keep playing on different tables, cloth and conditions.

That is also where equipment matters. A cue that feels the same in a humid Florida ballroom and a dry hall back home is one less thing to think about when the match is on the hill. If you want a shaft, taper and weight set up for how you play, tell us about your game and request a quote.
